Site Host's Thoughts: I think that James deserves every penny. He IS The Sopranos. The show will not last without him. This is just business, and this type of business is very unstable so I can understand him trying to get as much as he can while he is still in the position to do so.
Look at the show's history for a second. Four seasons into the show and it is still winning Awards. It is still the most original show on TV. It still has an enormous fan base. The first episode of the fourth season had more viewers then all the free channels put together for that time slot. You cannot argue with facts.
This is just one of those very rare times where everything came together so perfectly, the writers, actors and producers. After four seasons it is hard to distribute the credit for the show's success. But why kill the formula that makes money for everyone involved and at the same time actually breaks some new grounds in the stale and repetitive industry?
Here is an article that actually supports James.

Visitor Opinions:
Gandolfini is a genius. The De Niro of his acting generation. His time is only just beginning. The Sopranos is a classic show and James is smart enoguh to know that without him the show would not function. Dave Duchovny did the same when Fox tried to rip him off by making millions from the X-files without giving him jackshit. That show went on about 4 seasons too long. Once a classic, it is now only regarded as a good show. It would be tragic if the Sopranos went on without james gandolfini and for that reason i hope season 4 is the last if he does not return. However season 5 presents as potentially the greatest season in tv history if Chase does it right. Submitted by Nathan W.
I Love the show, and James is Tony. It's the part he was born to play. He deserves the money he is asking for. The show would never be the same without him, or any of the main characters for that matter. What a void, when Big Pussy left and Ralphie. I even watch the reruns over and over. It was so exciting that he and Edie won the SAG Award. All the actors are perfectly cast. Submitted by Mary R.
AS LONG AS WE DON'T HAVE TO WAIT AN EXTRA DAY LET ALONE ANOTHER YEAR LIKE BEFORE THEN I COULD CARE LESS WHAT HAPPENS. JUST WRAP IT UP DAMMIT! I WANNA SEE TONY KICK NEW YORKS ASS AND BECOME THE MAN! Submitted by Sgt. Butland.
HBO needs to whack: "Def Poetry", "Sex Feat Blunder", and stop paying top dollar for third rate movies. Give the money to J.Gandolfini, you cheap bastards! I'm interested to see what HBO subscription status will be without The Sopranos. Submitted by Joel T.
First of all, I no longer have HBO. Secondly, even know that I have never seen the "Sopranos, regardeless of how sucessful the series may have been or is, IT SUCKS! You should kill off Grandolfini (which has to be an arrogant not born as Hollywood name) in a very gruesome, extremely violent way. Who is this basically unknown would be actor to demand the things (money) that he is demanding. Next thing you want to know, he will be trying to have directing and posibally producing rights even though the in my opinion(since I've never seen him act [and my bet is that he is mediocre with a very prominent role] he will try to screw you again. KILL HIM OFF and do it very violently like infiltrating his home and letting him watch his family being killed one at a time, including his siblings, children and everybody a party that he throws. Thank you. Submitted by Dge.
I think what HBO is doing is complete bullshit! its outrageous, That guy deserves the money, its not like HBO cant afford it. And if they think they can do the show without him, there out of there minds. Submitted by Sally L.
My feeling is that Jim Gandolfini derserves all that he can reasonably get without damaging the show and other actors. He should have accepted the 850k that was offered him. There's a fine line between fighting for all you can get and damaging the public's conception of the show and more importantly of him as an actor and a person. If he damages the show and forces it to end or be altered, he'll not only be type cast as a gangster but he'll have earned a bad reputation among the hollywood circles. He took some bad advice by holding out for the 1 mill per show!!! Submitted by JMonaco
I think $1 mill is just a tad over the top don't you? People in America are slaves at $6 bucks an hour. Get a life!
James Gandolfini deserves the mill a year or whatever he can get. This has nothing to do with people making 6 bucks an hour. You go see movies? Mel Gibson and other actors get 15-20 mill a picture. You watch any sports? You see what ballplayers get. This has to do with a very talented man and his worth to the show. If you want to end violence on tv, like one person wrote, what has that got to do with what Gandolfini gets paid? What are you doing in the Sopranos site anyway? As a huge Soprano fan I hope this issue can be resolved so we have a 5th and Final Season! Submitted by Hal B.
Settle this crap and get back to work!!!
I am disgusted by this show and disgusted by James G. for blackmailing HBO for a greedy million an episode. I wouldn't give that pig a nickel for what he does. A million dollars an episode???? Oh puuuuhhhlllleeeeeeaaaase! I hope HBO sues his butt for every penny he ever made off them. Let it be a lesson to them to stop this violent show and quit corrupting our world with trash!
There are two ways to look at this battle. You can look at it from a getting what you work for vs. getting what you deserve. Scenario #1: Getting what you work for. James Gandolfini is not worth $1,000,000. Considering it takes 9 days to shoot an average episode, $1,000,000 is way too much for 9 days of work in anyone's book. Scenario #2: Getting what you deserve. James Gandolfini is worth every penny of that $1,000,000. Considering the whopping amount of people that have subscribed to HBO solely for The Sopranos (just look at the viewership for the start of the 4th season), add into that sales, rentals, and licensing of the lucrative Sopranos name, he is worth every last penny. Not to mention the fact James Gandolfini is irreplaceable; he brings too much to the character. Tony Soprano is the show. If HBO were to somehow continue the show minus Tony Soprano, HBO would be shooting themselves in the foot with a cannon.
Pay him the money; he deserves it. Submitted by Dave S.
Excuse me, but does anyone remember a show called "FRIENDS", where most of the cast is making over $1,000,000 an episode.....I'll have to agree that if NBC (a waining network) is going to pay that much money to total losers like the "FRIENDS" cast, than HBO (a successful multi-billion dollar pay channel) can afford to pay a highly respected seasoned actor like Mr. Gandolfini a MILLION Dollars an episode....What, isn't that how HBO pays prize fighters to fight on their channel...or Don King of that matter.
P.S. This is definitely the result of prolonging the show another 5th season... David Chase, you should've stopped at the 4th season. Submitted by Jonathon T.
The person who claimed The Sopranos are "corrupting our world with trash" has to be a Christian. If so, I wonder what his or her explanation would be for Cain killing Able in the book of Genesis? I don't think he or she can blame The Sopranos for that. People blaming television for violence are just looking for excuses not to be parents. I think James is doing what he needs to do. For all we know, he could get whacked this coming season. I hope thisgets settled as soon as possible. I love The Sopranos and I love HBO. Submitted by Amity Q.
